Helen AddisonHelen Addison is the owner of Addison Art Gallery in Orleans. In addition to growing the careers of established artists from across the United States and France, Ms. Addison is known for bringing emerging artists to the national market. Ms. Addison also runs The Addison Agency, a marketing firm dedicated to maximizing results for select businesses and non-profit organizations. Previously, she was the owner of Addison & Associates Advertising and Public Relations. That agency served a diverse roster of profit, non-profit and governmental organizations and earned over 70 international and regional awards for marketing creativity and effectiveness. Ms. Addison holds an MBA from Cornell University.
Representative Demetrius Atsalis
Demetrius J. Atsalis is a State Representative, Second Barnstable District. He holds a BA degree from Northeastern University and a Social Studies Certification from Salem State College. Representative Atsalis is the former Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Election Laws. Currently he serves on several committees including the House Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets, the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture, and the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development. He is also involved with the Hyannis Civil Executive Board; Hyannis Waterfront Action Group; Barnstable Youth Baseball/Soccer.
Peter Nils Baylor
Peter Nils Baylor is a partner in the Business Department of Nutter, McLennen, and Fish. He concentrates his practice in bankruptcy reorganizations, and trademark or copyright law. Peter’s intellectual property practice covers trademark and copyright matters, including domestic and foreign registrations, and dispute resolution both in and out of court. He is a member of the International Trademark Association. Peter is also a member of the College des Conseillers of The French Library and Cultural Center in Boston, a church school teacher, and a former library trustee in his hometown. Peter holds a Juris Doctor from Harvard, a Master of Science from Columbia, and a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth, the majority of which was obtained courtesy of the United States Army (1968-1972).
J.C. Bouvier
J.C. Bouvier comes to the Conference from the International Fund for Animal Welfare headquarters in Yarmouthport, where he works as Social Marketing Lead. In this role, J.C. distills the constant flow of information from this global animal welfare organization’s regional campaign work into digestible actions for its growing Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube followings. J.C. also is the gatekeeper cum editor-in-chief for the IFAW AnimalWire.org blog which gathers program field reports, opinions and expert analysis of animal welfare policy and pushes them into the blogosphere. His efforts have helped IFAW gain over 30,000 fans on the IFAW fan page, several thousand twitter followers and more than two million views of IFAW YouTube video uploads. Sarah Colvin
Sarah Colvin is News Director at Cape Cod Broadcasting, which operates four radio stations on Cape Cod. She began her radio career at Cape Cod Community College’s 90.7 WKKL. She served as the News Director for that station from 1996-1997 and the Program Director from 1997-1998. In 2005, Sarah joined the Cape Cod Broadcasting team and has been bringing news and information to the Cape community ever since. She was named News Director in August of 2009. Sarah anchors the morning news on 99.9 WQRC and hosts a weekly public interest program, The Sunday Journal, which airs on all four of Cape Cod Broadcasting’s stations. Sarah has a deep-rooted interest in the Cape’s arts and music community, and is a photographer in her spare time.
Amanda Converse
Amanda Converse received her BA in Environmental Studies from Union College, and her Masters in Environmental Policy from The George Washington University, and has held positions as an environmental consultant, and in various environmental non-profits. In July 2008 Amanda and her partner Jitka Borowick created Greenover, a green consulting company that helps individuals, businesses and organizations through the process of going “green.” Amanda was also the Development Director for the Hyannis Main Street BID from 2006 to 2010, during which time she worked with many small businesses on their marketing strategies and business models. And in November 2009, Amanda decided to open her own small business, Shift Conscious Clothing, an eco-friendly women’s clothing store located in downtown Hyannis.
Peter Earle
Peter Earle is the Executive Director of the Academy of Performing Arts and has directed and acted in many fine performances both at the Academy and across New England. Mr. Earle is credited with helping to resurrect and maintain proper business practices, through frugal yet solid fiscal management at the Academy of Performing Arts. Peter is also the Producing Artistic Director at The Academy and long serving Drama Instructor at Nauset Regional Middle School, and was Drama Director at Nauset Regional High School from 1995-1997. Peter is a member of the Board of Directors for Artslink, an organization whose mission is to supplement monies for arts programs in school systems throughout the Lower Cape area. Mr. Earle, through the Academy Playhouse, is a member of the Cape Cod Theatre Coalition.
Loretta Feeney
Loretta Feeney has had the good fortune to have studied oil painting under three great American Impressionist painters. She first studied with John Terelak at his Gloucester Academy of Art, then on the Cape with Hyannis Port artist Sam Barber, who introduced Loretta to his mentor Henry Hensche, of the famous Cape Cod School of Art School of Art in Provincetown. She then studied under Hensche’s tutelage in the ways of his teacher, the late Charles Hawthorne. In national exhibitions, Feeney has won the New York Knickerbocker Gold Medal of Honor, as well as The American Artist Professional League Award, the Sara Boal Memorial Award of the Catherine Lorrillard Wolfe National Exhibition for Women at the National Arts Club, New York, as well as the Grumbacher Gold Medal at the Salmagundi Club’s New York exhibition. Feeney was also the first female artist to be honored with a solo show at Boston’s prestigious St. Botolph Club.
Judith Goetz
Judith Goetz is the Director of News Operations for WXTK-FM. Before joining Qantum Communications, she was a production assistant/ field producer for the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer in Washington, D.C. She also held various positions in print, broadcast media and Capitol Hill before moving to Cape Cod in 2001. Since joining WXTK-FM Goetz has been the recipient of numerous AP broadcasting awards, American Red Cross awards and an AME-NE for a special report on homeowners insurance and its effects on Cape and Island residents. Goetz is a graduate of The Putney School, Sweet Briar College and holds a Master’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism and Public Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C. She lives on Cape Cod with her two children.
Jim Hill
By day Jim Hill is a graphic designer working with businesses to improve their branding, online presence and social media profile. By night he is a children’s writer/illustrator out to make kids laugh until milk shoots out of their little noses. He has been, or currently is: a computer game artist, actor/writer/director/producer for a family theater, user interface engineer, art director, writer of inspirational silliness, marathoner, father of one, husband of one, college instructor and raconteur. Jim is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, and serves on the boards of both the Cape Cod Technology Council and the Cape Cod Writers Center.
Representative Randy Hunt
Randy Hunt’s professional experience ranges from being chief financial officer of a publicly-held manufacturing company to owning a local and community-minded CPA practice. He spent several years managing a manufacturing plant in Juarez, Mexico, becoming fluent in Spanish and acquiring quite a taste for enchiladas and tamales. As a Town of Sandwich selectman, and recently elected State Representative for the 5th Barnstable District, he tackles the challenges of municipal and state government that face our communities with a common sense and pragmatic approach. He serves on three committees in the Statehouse: The Joint Committee on Elder Affairs, The Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse, and The Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. He is also a member of the Interagency Council on Substance Abuse and Prevention, a group headed up by the Lt. Governor.
Elizabeth Ives Hunter
Elizabeth Ives Hunter grew up as a studio brat, surrounded by artists, models, paint and canvas. She received her bachelor’s degree from McGill University with Joint Honors in Economics and Political Science and began a banking career. In 1981 she became an advisor to the R. H. Ives Gammell Studios Trust and was drawn back into the art world, which led to two decades of lecturing, writing and editing books in the field, and curating international exhibitions. In 2003 Mrs. Hunter curated the Frederick Judd Waugh exhibition for the Cape Cod Museum of Art and was appointed Exhibitions Curator in July of that year. In September she was appointed Executive Director of the museum. She has taught courses on Provincetown Painters 1883-1960 at the Academy for Life Long Learning and at the Weny Education Center at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Mrs. Hunter lives in Walpole, Massachusetts with her husband, painter Robert Douglas Hunter, and their children.
Paula Hersey
Paula Hersey is the Chief Penguin and President of Penguin Digital Design. After a fifteen year career in Retail Sales, Management and Marketing, it was time to embark on the career she never dreamed of – owning a Web Design and Development company. PDD specializes in the WordPress framework, and consults on today’s most popular social media applications. Paula holds active roles in several local organizations, including workshop presenter at Geek Girl Camp, Board Member and Membership Chair of the Cape Cod Technology Council, Technology/Newsletter Chair of the American Business Women’s Association of Cape Cod, member of the Hyannis Area, Sandwich, and Harwich Chambers of Commerce. Ms. Hersey resides in Marstons Mills with her husband David and her three, four-legged kids Jettie, Nantucket and Wellfleet.
Peter Karlson
Peter is the President/CEO of the technology consultancy NeuEon Inc. Peter is a serial entrepreneur with experience in bootstrapping, strategic investments and angel financing. His firm specializes in providing guidance and advice to entrepreneurs and established organizations looking to use technologies more effectively. As a former chief technology officer for two Massachusetts based technology services firms, Harrison & Troxell, Inc. and Inforonics BTS, Peter has gained diverse industry expertise in healthcare, non-profit, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and publishing. He has been involved with developing Internet technologies since 1991 with the creation of the first Internet browser, the InterNavigator™.
Jerome Karter
After obtaining an Economics degree from Oberlin College, Jerry Karter spent 35 years in the insurance and reinsurance industry, 18 of which were spent in London, Paris and Brussels before retiring to Orleans in 2002 and becoming involved in the orchestra. He retired from SCOR GROUP of Paris, France, one of the world’s largest reinsurance firms, where he served as President and CEO of the U.S. subsidiaries from 1989-2002. He simultaneously was a member of the executive committee SCOR GROUP, Paris. In “retirement,” Jerry founded Sage Consulting, a reinsurance arbitration and expert witness practice before he turned his attention to the symphony. Jerry Karter spent two years on the board of trustees for the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra (CCSO) and served as Vice Chairman just prior to being elected the Executive Director of the organization in 2007. Currently, Jerry Karter oversees all operations as Executive Director of both the CCSO and the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts, which merged this year on September 1, 2010.
David Kuehn
David Kuehn is the Executive Director of Cotuit Center for the Arts. Since assuming the position in March of 2010, he has spearheaded an initiative to help introduce new patrons to one of Cape Cod’s undiscovered gems. Previously David held a wide variety of positions in the classical music industry over the past 25 years, including retail, distribution, sales, marketing, PR and A & R. In Los Angeles, David worked with such visionaries as Philip Glass, John Adams, Keith Haring, David Hockney, Dan Flavin, Franco Assetto and more. In NYC, he ran the classical music division of RCA records, guiding recording projects by such luminaries as Leontyne Price, Van Cliburn, Michael Tilson Thomas, Denyce Graves, Max Vengerov and the Kronos Quartet. He is a former Chairman and current member of the advisory board of the GALE fund, sits on the Board of the Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod and has volunteered for several organizations on the Cape.
Representative Tim Madden
As a longtime Nantucket resident, Rep. Madden has been active in state politics and local town government. Prior to becoming a State Representative, he served as a Legislative Liaison for the past ten years, and has been the Chairman for the Nantucket County Commissioners and the Board of Selectmen; a Nantucket Land Bank Commissioner for five years; and has served on numerous other boards and commissions. In 2008 he was elected State Representative to the Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket District for Freshman term. This session, Madden has been appointed to the following four committees: Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture, Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government, Committee on Transportation, and the Committee on Financial Services.
Christine McCarthy
Christine McCarthy has been the Executive Director of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) in Provincetown, MA since 2001. She is responsible for all artistic, administrative, fiscal and strategic directions of the largest presenter of Cape Cod art by national, regional and international artists. In 2006, under the direction of McCarthy, PAAM was awarded the Silver LEED Certification as the first “green” art museum in the country upon successful completion of a five million dollar renovation and expansion project. Most recently, Ms. McCarthy completed the accreditation process as set forth by the American Association of Museums. PAAM was awarded accreditation in March 2009. Since 1985, McCarthy has worked in numerous galleries and museums in New England. They include the Hunt-Cavanagh Gallery at Providence College; the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT; The Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY; and The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA. She is an adjunct professor at Boston University’s Metropolitan College and teaches Managing a Visual Arts Organization.
Holly Erin McCarthy
Holly Erin McCarthy grew up in Marstons Mills. She attended Plymouth State University and graduated in 2006 with a BA in Theater Arts/Acting. At graduation she received the Plymouth Players Award for Outstanding Service to the Theater Community. Holly has worked at theaters all over Cape Cod and Boston. She toured the United States three times with National Theater for Arts and Education. In addition to performing, Holly has also worked as a costume designer, fight choreographer, lighting designer, stage manager, company manager, pyrotechnic, and production coordinator. Holly currently does commercial work on the side and performs in murder mysteries up and down the east coast with Jest Mysteries. In August, Holly co-founded Theater Under the Stairs with partner Chris Compton. They have since staged two productions; their third will be up in April. Holly is also writing an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, to be performed this summer.
John Murelle
Baritone John Murelle is a versatile singer with a wide range of musical interests, in-cluding art song, opera and oratorio, Broadway and popular songs. He holds Vocal Performance degrees from the University of Michigan and the Boston Conservatory, and a Diploma from the Boston University Opera Institute. John’s keen interest in song literature has earned him accolades as a concert singer. In great demand as a voice teacher, John has a private studio in East Sandwich and teaches voice at the Cape Conservatory, where he was recently named the chairperson of the voice department. His students regularly receive scholarships at recognized music schools throughout the U.S. Mr. Murelle is an active member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing, AGO (The American Guild of Organists), The Chatham Music Club and Arts Falmouth. Representative Sarah Peake
Rep. Sarah Peake is a State Representative of the 4th Barnstable District. Rep. Peake was recently named the Chair of the Massachusetts Tourism, Arts & Cultural Development Committee. She was also appointed as the Speaker’s Appointee of the Massachusetts Creative Economy Council, and a Legislative Member of the Atlantic State Marine Fisheries Commission. Rep. Peake spent her childhood summers on Cape Cod, learning to sail and developing a love of nature and of the Cape that continues today. Rep. Peake attended Pace University and Colgate University.
Paul Pronovost
Paul Pronovost has been with the Cape Cod Times since November 2000 and has been the editor of the since 2005. The Cape Cod Times has received numerous national and regional accolades, including Newspaper of the Year and Website of the Year from the Suburban Newspapers of America, New England Newspaper & Press Association and New England Associated Press News Executives. Paul holds a BA in English from Saint Anselm College and a Masters in Public Administration from Suffolk University. He was a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2009 and 2010 and is past president of the Massachusetts Press Association and state Sunshine Chairman for the Society of Professional Journalists. Paul and his wife Patricia have two children, Leslie and Marguerite, and live in Cotuit.
Dick Rand
Dean Emeritus Richard Rand recently re-tired from Cape Cod Community College after serving for almost 20 years. He began his career there in the classroom and subsequently became Chair of the Business Department, Associate Dean of several different academic Divisions, and finally Associate Dean of Workforce Education and Community Outreach. Prior to moving to Cape Cod, he was the Chair of the Business Department of Green Mountain College in Vermont, after working as an Executive for 12 years at Filene’s. He holds a BBA from the University of Massachusetts and a MAE from Castleton State College in Vermont. Dean Rand also serves on the board of the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, the Cape & Islands Unit, and he and his wife volunteer regularly at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater.
George Scharr
George J. Scharr is the Director of Community Education of the Cape Cod Symphony and Conservatory of Music & Arts, and Director for the Falmouth Campus of its subsidiary, the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music & Arts. His teaching credentials include Falmouth Academy and he is also an advisor to students in the New England Conservatory of Music’s Entrepreneurial Musicianship program. Scharr has also created and implemented such youth-oriented programs as Lesson Plans for the Classics, a multi-media lecture series about composers featured in the CCSO Classics Concert Series and Master Classes for the Classics, a program designed to give talented high school musicians the rare opportunity to study with one of the CCSO’s renowned guest artists. An accomplished musician and graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, he is the bass trombonist for the CCSO and the founder of the Symphony Swing Band and Downtown Dixie Strutters ensembles in which he performs.
Mark Skala
Mark Skala is publisher of GateHouse Media’s Cape Cod region, overseeing all aspects of the company’s seven weekly newspapers, including the Bourne Courier, Falmouth Bulletin, Sandwich Broadsider, The Register, Harwich Oracle, the Cape Codder and the Provincetown Banner, as well as 16 websites associated with wickedlocalcapecod.com. Skala has spent 25+ years in the community publishing business, with may of those years right here on Cape Cod. He loves the connection readers and customers have to their community papers and websites and values the vibrancy that interaction creates. Daniel Springer
Painter and educator, Daniel Springer has been teaching in the Arts for over twenty years, the last sixteen at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School where he currently holds the position of Fine Arts Department Chair. Earning his BFA at Parsons School of Design in NYC, Dan also studied performance and theater design at Syracuse University and holds his Masters in English from Northeastern University. In addition to his duties at D-Y, he is also on the Advisory Board of the Cape Cod & Islands Art Educators Association and teaches regularly at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Dan has also presented workshops at multiple National Art Education Association conferences. Dan was recognized for his passionate work in art education by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod when he was named the “Arts Educator of the Year” in March of 2010.
David Still II
David Still II is the Editor of The Barnstable Patriot, a weekly newspaper published in and for the town of Barnstable and found online at www.barnstablepatriot.com. Mr. Still started as the town reporter for The Barnstable Patriot in 1989 and has held the title of editor since 1992. He holds a BA in English/Communications from North Adams State College, now known as the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. During his 21 years at The Barnstable Patriot, the paper moved from private family to corporate ownership. It has been among his goals to maintain the local focus of the paper that has kept it vital since the first issue was published in 1830.
Mindy Todd
Mindy Todd, host and producer of The Point on WCAI, examines critical issues for Cape Cod and the Islands. She brings 30 years of experience in radio and television to the job. After starting her broadcasting career as a midday DJ at WARE in Ware, Massachusetts, she quickly advanced to host of the morning drive show, which in 1981, made her one of the few women in broadcasting to anchor her own morning show. Mindy Todd’s career has covered nearly all aspects of broadcasting and taken her across the country. Her television work as a reporter and news anchor brought her to Northern New England, Indianapolis, IN and Nashville, TN. She has received numerous awards, most recently a National PRNDI (Public Radio News Directors Association) award for best Call-in program in the country.
Representative Cleon Turner
Cleon Turner is in his fourth term serving the First Barnstable District of Brewster, Dennis and most of Yarmouth. He serves on the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development, the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government, the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, and the House Committee on Personnel and Administration. Prior to being elected to the legislature, Cleon was a member of the Dennis Board of Selectmen and the Dennis Housing Authority. Cleon has a diverse background having worked in construction, law enforcement and the legal profession.
Anne Van Vleck
Anne Van Vleck was recently hired as the first-ever Executive Director for Cape Cod Young Professionals, a non-profit organization created to connect, engage and advance the emerging workforce and future leadership of Cape Cod. Anne most recently worked as the Event Director for the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fisherman’s Association and planned their annual fundraiser, The Hookers Ball. A graduate of Dickinson College, Anne has a background in Marketing & Communications. Anne has a passion for helping others and enjoyed two years volunteering with the Family Pantry, the Chatham Kids Care Club, and the Chatham Schools. Anne lives in Chatham with her husband and three sons.
Representative David Vieira
Representative David T. Vieira was born and raised in Falmouth. Vieira is a freshman legislator representing the towns of Falmouth, Bourne, Mashpee and Barnstable. He is currently a member of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, & Cultural Development; is a proud season ticket holder to the College Light Opera Company; and is engaged to
an artist.
Julianne Waite
Julianne Waite has been involved with the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod since 2004, and as a staff member since 2008, currently as the Director of Online & Print Media. Julie is a graduate of Oberlin College, with a background in Web Development and Graphic Design. She worked for several years in Cape.Com’s web development department, then as a freelance web designer when her son was younger, before joining the staff of the Arts Foundation. Julie currently serves on the Board of the Cape Cod Women’s Hockey League.
Anita Walker
Anita Walker has served as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) since April 2007. Walker is the Commonwealth’s highest ranking cultural official, overseeing an $11 million budget that supports a range of grants, services, and programs for the arts, humanities, and sciences in every community in Massachusetts. Walker has raised the visibility of the creative sector as a driving force for growth and prosperity in Massachusetts. She led investment of $37 million in arts and cultural building projects statewide since 2007 through the Mass. Cultural Facilities Fund. The Fund has provided more than 11,000 construction jobs and will create more than 1150 new permanent jobs, while helping to spur nearly $840 million in new investment in Massachusetts. Walker also led a new program of operating support for nonprofit arts, humanities, and science organizations called Cultural Investment Portfolio that deepens the state’s partnership with nearly 400 outstanding institutions.
State Senator Dan Wolf
Dan Wolf is the first-term State Senator from the Cape and Islands, one of the most unusual legislative districts in the country, stretching from the far tip of Provincetown across 11 Cape towns plus much of the Town of Barnstable and all of the islands of Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Gosnold. Though the Senator’s family roots are in Philadelphia, he came to the Cape in his first year of life, and grew up summering along the shores of Pleasant Bay. In 1988, Senator Wolf and a handful of others founded what would become Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines, which has since earned recognition as one of the most philanthropic companies in southeastern Massachusetts, in addition to being an environmental leader. Senator Wolf is a member of the Board of Directors of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, a Board Member of The Association to Preserve Cape Cod, and Chair of the Board of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.
Lauren Wolk
Lauren Wolk is the Associate Director of the Cultural Center of Cape, a published novelist and poet, and an assemblage artist. She has held many positions, including Senior Editor with a major educational publisher, freelance magazine writer and contributing editor, high school English and Creative Writing teacher, Assistant Director at the Cape Cod Writers’ Center, and writer for the Battered Women’s Project at the St. Paul American Indian Center. Lauren is this year’s recipient of the Community Leadership in Support of the Arts award, along with Cultural Center of Cape Cod Executive Director, Robert Nash. Lauren lives in Centerville.

Atlantic Coast Academy of DanceThe Atlantic Coast Academy of Dance is owned and operated by Tanya Vincent. Under the artistic leadership of Mrs. Vincent, the Atlantic Coast Academy of Dance is dedicated to teaching children enthusiasm for classical ballet, creating a world that consistently produces good citizens and talented artists.
Cape Cod Conservatory A Cappella Choir
Cape Cod Conservatory A Cappella Choir is a performance group for young women ages 13 to 18, conducted by Janice Hannah, B.M., M. Ed. Membership in the A Cappella Choir is by audition. The girls start at the beginning of the school year and receive intensive coaching and training. Their repertoire includes a broad range of three- and four-part work, from classical to pop.
Jonathan Goward
Jon Goward is a producer, director, editor, sometimes videographer and music composer of documentary videos based on Cape Cod. Besides producing thousands of TV commercials, he’s also been responsible for videos for Cape Cod’s Habitat for Humanity and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce. When not working on videos or his own music projects, he handles lead jug in the All Worn Out Jug Band. The full-length Painting Provincetown can be found online at:

Harwich Junior Theater
Harwich Junior Theater presents Kids Celebrate Broadway!, a revival of the fabulous hit musical revue with favorite songs and dances from Peter Pan, Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Oliver, Bye Bye Birdie! and many more. Created and directed by Terry Norgeot, with musical direction by Robert Wilder, it opens April 15.
