Art*Island Blossom Festival

In its second year, the Art*Island Festival celebrates the creativity and imagination that forge communities on Martha’s Vineyard.

Wednesday at the Harbor View Hotel, 131 North Water Street, Edgartown
5 pm: Art at the Harbor View, an exhibition open for the duration of the festival.
7 - 8 pm: Pecha Kucha, a live, lively and thoughtful presentations by people, artists, and creators on a particular theme. In collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. In the Menemsha Room. 8:30 pm: Whale Nation, an astonishing evocation of the million year history of whales, dolphins, whaling, and the ocean. Performed in verse written by Heathcoate Williams. In collaboration with Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater

Thursday, Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, 130 Center Street, Vineyard Haven
7 - 8 pm: An Evening Without, A performance/reading presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts ACLU and the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. In this quietly impactful and moving performance, people will read short excerpts from works of famous writers and artists who were kept out of the US for political reasons. Readers include Rose Styron, Geraldine Brooks, Jay Allison, and others.

Friday, Vineyard Playhouse, 24 Church St, Vineyard Haven
8 - 10 pm: The Vineyard Playhouse cast will perform a staged reading of a brand new play. More details to come!

3 pm: Dance. In collaboration with Marianne Goldberg.
5 - 6 pm: Art and Life Artist Panel. Join this public discussion about the role of art in communities and in our lives.
7:30 - 10:30 pm: Gideon’s Army, presented in collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival. The film follows the personal stories of Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander, and June Hardwick, three young public defenders who are part of a small group of idealistic lawyers in the Deep South challenging the assumptions that drive a criminal justice system strained to the breaking point.

Creative Economy Speaker Series
Tuesdays, Now - October 29, 11:30 am - 1 pm

Each week a different speaker is welcomed to discuss their perspectives on creative economy and their experiences working in the industry. Bring a bag lunch; coffee and water will be provided.
October 22: Wendy Northcross, Director of the Cape Cad Chamber of Commerce (and tentatively Tom Lynch, Town of Barnstable Administrator). We welcome Wendy and Tom from Cape Cod to share their experience with the creative economy on the regional scale. Come to hear about their approaches to arts & culture on the Cape, and what Martha’s Vineyard can do to build its own identity as an arts & culture destination.
October 29: Helena Fruscio, Creative Economy Industry Director, Massachusetts Department of Housing and Economic Development. Arts Martha’s Vineyard is happy to welcome back Helena Fruscio to conclude our speaker series this year. Helena will speak from the state perspective on ways to grow and support the creative economy.

Bob Avakian Photography

Bob Avakian has called the Vineyard home since 1973, and has sought to capture the Island’s beauty through his photography. He captures landscapes at night and at dawn, seeking to catch “a moment suspended between night and day.” Through a partnership with the Preservation Trust, Bob will exhibit his photographs in the beautiful setting of the historic Daniel Fisher House. An annual favorite at Morning Glory Farms. This year’s festival will have lots of activities for kids old and young including a pumpkin carving contest, hay mazes, and hay rides. The Yard’s professional dance collective, directed by Jesse Keller and Alison Manning, will be showing select works created over the past three years that the group has been in residence. Dance pieces include works created during the 2013 summer season, 2012 season, and a few brand new works.
