Third season of Arts Foundation of Cape Cod podcast premieres today
January 11, 2020 (Hyannis, MA) – Art is the perfect vehicle for understanding ourselves and the world around us. Starting today, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) will examine that power in its latest season of the Creative Exchange podcast.
Hosted by AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake and Provincetown Community Television Executive Director Amy Davies, the podcast launched in 2019 to highlight artists and arts leaders in our region and to better understand the creative process.
This season will expand on that theme as the pair explore topical issues like the pandemic and its impact on the arts, social justice, and the 2020 presidential election.
“While the past year has had a devastating effect on the arts, I’ve been inspired by the resilience of artists who have persevered in the face of all the obstacles in their way,” said Wake. “I’m proud to be part of a sector with such strong and brave individuals who have continued to create and who have used their art to fight injustice, to make meaningful statements, and to make a difference in the lives of others.”
“I’ve found the interviews this season an important way for me to stay in touch with other artists during this time of isolation,” Davies said. “I hope the episodes will bring comfort and inspiration to listeners and foster community between creative people in our region and beyond.”
Episodes of the podcast will be released every Monday through March, starting today with musician Sarah Burrill of Eastham, who talks about using art to connect with people during the pandemic.
A dozen other local and regional artists round out the lineup for season three of the Creative Exchange, including:
- Hyannis Artists in Residence Rachael Devaney, a writer and photographer from Onset; Deanna Nagle, a fashion designer from Hyannis; and Lily Olin, a visual artist from Brewster
- Provincetown-based visual artists Laura Shabott and Marian Roth
- Boston Ballet soloist Patric Palkens
- Indie rock singer/songwriter Anne Stott of Provincetown
- Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra founder and Music Director Matt Scinto of Yarmouth
- Ashleigh Gordon, violist and artistic and executive director of the Boston-based nonprofit Castle of Our Skins
- Visual artist Carl Lopes of Barnstable
- Boston-based singer/songwriter Will Dailey
- Interdisciplinary artist Esteban del Valle of Brooklyn, New York
Matt Scinto said he appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the Creative Exchange and to share a side of himself that is not readily apparent for patrons of the orchestra. “For my field of classical music, it is one of those things where audiences show up and we come out on stage to silence, perform, and go home. There’s not a lot of dialogue between us,” he said. “It is tough for people to see that there are personalities behind the musicians and we’re not just robots performing on stage.”
He also had high praise for the AFCC for using the Creative Exchange to shine a bright light on the talent that abounds on Cape Cod. “The podcast is helping others learn about all the unique and cool people who are out here working in different areas of the arts,” he said. “This is a pretty diverse place to be, but oftentimes we kind of live in our own little bubbles artistically. To be able to talk about our work and push it out is an important thing the podcast is helping to do.”
The AFCC started the Creative Exchange in 2016 as a one-day conference to provide professional development opportunities for artists and arts leaders while connecting the region’s creatives,
business owners, and community leaders to one another.
Two years ago, it shifted to a podcast that is available on Spotify, Apple, and the AFCC’s website, www.artsfoundation.org. Like the past two seasons, the AFCC will culminate this one by hosting a panel discussion where the public can listen to, meet, and engage with guests of season three of the Creative Exchange.
Businesses interested in sponsoring the Creative Exchange should contact AFCC Director of Development Amy Tuttle at either atuttle@artsfoundation.org or at 508-362-0066, ext. 112.
