Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea Conductor and Program Announced

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Greg Skomal

HYANNIS, MA (June 27, 2017)—Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum.

There’s something making waves on the Cape this summer, and it’s coming ashore on Sunday, August 13.

The 32nd Annual Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert will welcome “Shark Week”contributor and leading shark expert Dr. Gregory Skomal as guest conductor. Skomal will join Keith Lockhart and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a lively show celebrating the Cape, the summer, and the memorable music of film composer John Williams. Coinciding with Williams’ 85th birthday this year, the concert will transport spectators to the cinema with the celebrated scores of “Harry Potter”, “Star Wars”, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, and of course, the perennial summer favorite, “Jaws.”

Skomal will hardly be a fish out of water when he conducts the iconic theme to the 1975 film on the stage of the Hyannis Village Green.  A senior marine fisheries biologist with the Massachusetts Marine Fisheries since 1987, Skomal has tagged more than 100 sharks in local waters and has appeared on the Discovery Channel’s hit summer series “Shark Week.” In addition to his experience as an underwater explorer, photographer, and author, he is the head of the Massachusetts Shark Research Program, and an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts School for Marine Science and Technology in New Bedford.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Skomal at the Pops this year,” said Julie Wake, executive director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. “His work in our community has advanced understanding of great white sharks and put the Cape on the map as a hotspot of shark research. ”

She continued: “With Dr. Skomal at the helm, this year’s concert will truly be a celebration of the Cape’s unique scientific, artistic and cultural offerings—all with a touch of movie magic.”

“Citizens Bank is once again proud to support the arts on Cape Cod with our sponsorship of Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea,” said Jerry Sargent, president, Citizens Bank Massachusetts. “We support memorable events in our communities, and with Dr. Skomal as this year’s guest conductor this is a summer event you won’t want to miss.”

“From the start of the pre-show at 1 p.m. until the symphony’s final bow at 7 p.m., we’ve planned a one-of-a-kind evening of music and culture,” said Wake.

We’re gonna need a bigger boat.
